Two inmates escaped from the greater Athens area's Korydallos penitentiary overnight on Wednesday. The two fugitives, identified as Albanian nationals and brothers, were serving multiple theft and robbery convictions.

The pair had cut the bars to their cell, made their way to a courtyard and then used a makeshift hook and rope to climb over the facility's main wall, and all without guards or surveillance equipment noticing their movements.

Korydallos is often described as Greece's "maximum security" lock up.
