One of Greece's most notorious urban terrorists, Savvas Xiros, has filed a request for parole, citing serious health reasons.

Xiros is serving five life sentences for is participation in the once-elusive "17 November" ultra-leftist terror group.

The 55-year-old erstwhile church mural painter was severely injured in June 2002 while planting a bomb in the ferry boat section of the port of Piraeus. Xiros lost part of his right hand, much of his vision, hearing and also sustained blast injuries to his chest.

His petition is based on a revised penal code article, dating from 2015, part of the controversial "Paraskevopoulos law" passed by the leftist-rightist coalition government in a bid to reduce prison overcrowding by freeing thousands of inmates, including felons.
