An operational plan unveiled recently by Greece's Independent Public Revenues Authority refers to extensive audits and legal actions against taxpayers with arrears to the state, included in no less than 60 "prior actions" in 2018 in order to meet memorandum-mandated fiscal targets.

An operational plan unveiled recently by Greece's Independent Public Revenues Authority refers to extensive audits and legal actions against taxpayers with arrears to the state, included in no less than 60 "prior actions" in 2018 in order to meet memorandum-mandated fiscal targets.

One of the more lofty goals cited in the operational plan is the collection of revenues from arrears exceeding 49 billion euros, out of the nearly 100 billion euros owed to the Greek state, although much of this gargantuan amount dates back decades.

The total number of on-site audits cited by the authority, which itself was created on Jan. 1, 2018, as part of a memorandum obligation vis-a-vis creditors, exceeds 70,000. Another unprecedented initiative is for tax bureau employees to call taxpayers to remind them of their obligations, with up to 100,000 calls cited.
