Greece's main opposition political leader, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has requested the mediation of Qatar Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in efforts to resolve the issue of two Greek servicemen still held in a Turkish jail after allegedly straying into the neighboring country's territory earlier this month.

Mitsotakis, the president of center-right New Democracy (ND), is visiting the Gulf state on Tuesday.

According to reports, Qatar's influential leader and the former Greek minister discussed developments in the wider region, while Mitsotakis expressed his concern to his Qatari interlocutors over what he called increased Turkish aggressiveness.

Beyond geo-political issues, ND sources said Mitsotakis presented the Qatari side with his proposals to transform Greece into a more attractive destination for foreign investments.
