Noteworthy drop in Greek jobless rate recorded in Aug. 2017

The unemployment rate in Greece eased to 20.6 percent in August - the height of the summer season in the country - a significant decrease of 2.8 percentage points, compared to the same month in 2016.

The development translates into an increase in the number of employed people by 101,578 and a reduction in the number of jobless by 141.342 over a 12-month period.

The number of non-active (in terms of economic activity) people posted a small increase of 5,215.

Specifically, the number of registered employed people in the country in August 2017 reached 3.792,358, up from 3.690,780 a year ago. The figure nears the 3.8-million mark for the first time in many years.

The number of unemployed decreased by 12.6 percent in August 2017 in comparison with the same month in 2017, and by 1.7 percent compared the preceding months, July 2017.

That development means that the number of registered unemployed dropped below one million for the first time since the economic crisis erupted in late 2009.

The record for unemployed people in the country was recorded in 2013, reaching 1.347,902.
