"Greece unequivocally condemns the heinous murder of #Russia's Ambassador to #Turkey. Sincerest condolences to his family&friends @mfa_russia" was the immediate Tweet issued by the foreign ministry in Athens.
A subsequent announcement by the Greek ministry on the shooting death of Andrey Karlov referred to a barbaric act that caused the tragic death of a diplomat.
"We express our abhorrence for this murderous act, which aims to provoke tension and regional destabilization.
"Our most sincere condolences to the Russian government and the members of the diplomat's family," the announcement added.
