Former Greek president of the republic Kostis Stephanopoulos passed away late Sunday evening at the age of 90.
Former Greek president of the republic Kostis Stephanopoulos passed away late Sunday evening at the age of 90.
He had been hospitalized since Thursday with a respiratory ailment at Athens’ Henri Dunant hospital.
Condolences were issued by practically all of Greece’s political leadership, including current president Prokopis Pavlopoulos.
An attorney by training, he served as president of the republic, a venerable but figurehead head of state position, from 1995 to 2004. A veteran lawmaker since the 1960s, he was one of the founding members New Democracy party, while he later founded his own small political formation.
