A social “mixer” was on the political “menu” Thursday evening at the Greek prime minister’s official Maximos Mansion office, as deputies from both the ruling SYRIZA party and the small junior coalition partner, the rightist-populist Independent Greeks’ party, were invited.
According to a source from Greek PM Alexis Tsipras’ increasingly embattled leftist government, the informal event was held to allow MPs an opportunity “to eat a party favor and have a glass of wine”.
Conversely, main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis remained squarely in “campaign mode” on Thursday evening, emphasizing at a party event in the western town of Agrinio that the leftist government’s recent law on national television broadcasting licenses will be repealed once his party is in power.
The former minister again reiterated his call for snap elections, telling supporters and local party cadres that “a political change is not far off”.
He also took aim squarely at an outlandish statement by a high court chief justice earlier in the day, who after exiting Tsipras’ office after a meeting with other high-ranking jurists, said Council of State judges take into “the pulse of society”.
"They (judges) are not exponents of the majority; they must enjoy complete independence," he emphasized.
