The CEO of the Hellenic Gas Transmission System Operator (DESFA), which operates the state-owned natgas grid in the country, on Monday tendered his resignation from the post.

According to reports circulated by the state-run news agency, Konstantinos Xifaras had earlier met with Energy and Environment Minister Panos Skourletis.

Xifaras had assumed the helm of the utility in October 2013.

The resignation comes amid sensitive negotiations for DESFA’s privatization with Azerbaijan’s Socar. A previous agreement foresaw for the transfer of 66 percent of DESFA’s shares and management to the Baku-based company, but under the condition that the latter’s participation subsequently fall under 49 percent – as per the EU Commission’s mandate. However, the prospect of the deal falling through has steadily gained ground of late, with the Greek state reportedly ready to demand compensation via legal action.
