The Athens Journalists’ Union (ESIEA) joined several other journalists’ guilds in the country on Thursday in calling for a 24-hour strike on Saturday by national television broadcasters.
The industrial action comes, ostensibly, in protest over an auction last week for television licenses in the country, whereby only four licenses were up for grabs. Two current broadcasters and two new corporate entities offered a total of 246 million euros for the licenses. The result left five current broadcasters without a license, and now facing the possibility of closure.
As it stands, the strike will mean no live image from the inauguration of the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Saturday -- and whatever streets protests -- at least via national television signals.
Unions are demanding a safeguarding of jobs at current broadcasters.
