A 20-year-old British woman vacationing in the Lagana resort area on Zakynthos island was left blinded and suffering kidney failure after reportedly consuming large quantities of bootleg alcohol.
The victim, who has not been identified and is being treated at a mainland hospital near the city of Patras, consumed the adulterated liquor at a club or clubs on the Ionian sea island, which is popular with UK holiday makers.
Physicians at the hospital told reporters that the woman is expected to recover her renal functions with proper care, whereas the prognosis for her damaged eyesight is pessimistic.
Methanol was reportedly found in the woman’s bloodstream, an ingredient often used to manufacture cheap and often dangerous spirits.
According to reports, authorities raided a specific club on Zakynthos where the young woman consumed alcohol before falling ill and confiscated several bottles of liquor for testing.
