Greece’s retail sector is facing continued and significant challenges amid an ongoing recession and a resulting loss in incomes, as well as still imposed capital controls, factors which have negatively affected demand for consumer goods in the country since the beginning of the economic crisis.

Business owners, merchants and traders, regardless of turnover and size, are desperately trying to adapt and survive in a difficult period, with mergers, buyouts and the unavoidable closings the “order of the day”. Capital controls and the exponential growth of digital applications have also witnessed a booming rise in electronic transactions and e-commerce over the recent period.

It’s within this challenging framework that Naftemporiki, Greece’s oldest and most prestigious financial daily, is organizing the first-ever conference for consumer goods and retailing, entitled “Speed Chess”, based on the fact that entrepreneurs in the country are now obliged to make decisions quickly and correctly to stay in business.

The conference will take place on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016 at the Divani Caravel Hotel in central Athens.

Four general themes will be broached at the conference:

  • Retail networks in the future
  • Producers and suppliers
  • Consumer demand
  • E-commerce
