Noted British author and journalist John Andrews calls Thursday’s referendum on the United Kingdom’s European Union membership an “open contest”, but one in which he expects “Bremain” to prevail in the end.
Andrews, a contributing editor for The Economist, spoke to “N” on the sidelines of an Economist conference at the seaside resort of Lagonissi, southeast of Athens proper.
Conversely, he said that in case of a vote for “Brexit”, he foresees a punitive reaction by the European Union, if but for practical reasons alone. Andrews explains what he believes led many British citizens to consider leaving the Union, while describing the potential repercussions of a possible “Brexit” on global markets and the European economy.
Finally, he assessed that a possible British departure will not affect Greece in the short term, but instead will affect Europe in the medium term.
