Roughly 65 percent of Greek-controlled ocean-going shipping belongs to the 40 top ship-owners or companies they control, based on dwt transport capacity, according to shipbroker Clarkson’s.
The capacity of the “top 40” translates into 230.4 million dwt.
According to the London-based company, the Aggelikousis group, with 137 vessels and a transport capacity of 26.02 million dwt, is first among Greek-controlled shipping interests.
The group’s Anangel Maritime operates 50 bulk carriers, while Maran Gas operates 30 LNG Carriers. Other companies under the group are Qatar-based Nakilat and Maran Tankers, which operates 57 tankers.
According to Clarkson’s latest report in May 2016, the Greek-controlled portion of global maritime shipping continues to be the largest, while showing signs of increasing its share and the distance between its second-place rival.
At last estimate, the number of vessels owned by Greek interests are 5,211 (195.9 gt), a number up by 1.9 percent in terms of tonnage, in comparison to the end of 2015.
Second place goes to Japanese interests, with 8,701 and 164.8 gt, up 0.42 percent, followed by Chinese-controlled shipping: 6,709 vessels, 131.3 million gt, up 0.61 percent.
Clarkson’s figures show that Greek interests control 16 percent of global tonnage to 13 percent for Japanese interests and 11 percent for the Chinese.
The figures were published in the same week as the biennial Posidonia maritime event takes places at a port of Piraeus convention center.
