The renowned Benaki Museum of Athens, in partnership with the Costa Navarino resort in southwest Greece and the Athens International Airport (AIA), will sponsor a special photographic exhibition this year commemorating the 120th anniversary of the revival of the Olympic Games.
The exhibition, entitled “Olympic Games 1896: The Photograph Album of Albert Mayer - From the Benaki Collections, As Viewed by Eva Nathena”, is a digital recreation of the first modern Games in Athens, held four years before the advent of the 20th century.
Nathena, a noted set and costume designer, and her colleagues, utilize sound and motion to “animate” the photographs of the Games’ official photographer, Dresden native Albert Mayer (1857- 1924).
The original illustrated tome, in fact, is stored at the Benaki’s historical archives section.
Two parallel exhibitions will debut at the Athens Airport’s “Art & Environment” hall from May 16 to Sept. 16 and at the five-star Costa Navarino’s Symbol Hall from April 27 to Nov. 30.
