Schaeuble 'optimistic' over Greek program; rules out debt relief

The latest “see-saw” in terms of official statements on the Greek program came from none other than German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble on Sunday, who said on German television that he was "quite optimistic" creditors would find a compromise to achieve a first review of the Greek program over the coming weeks.

The latest “see-saw” in terms of official statements on the Greek program came from none other than German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble on Sunday, who said on German television that he was "quite optimistic" creditors would find a compromise to achieve a first review of the Greek program over the coming weeks.

Nevertheless, he again ruled out debt relief.

"We will find a solution in the coming weeks but it will not have anything to do with debt relief, but rather with Greece achieving more in terms of being a more competitive economy," he told German public broadcaster ARD.

"We're helping Greece; we're buying it time," he added.
