FIFA to demand that Greek footbal cup play resume

A letter by the international football federation (FIFA) demanding that the Greek government reverse a decision cancelling the 2015-16 pro league cup tournament was expected in Athens on Tuesday.

A letter by the international football federation (FIFA) demanding that the Greek government reverse a decision cancelling the 2015-16 pro league cup tournament was expected in Athens on Tuesday.

Relevant sports deputy minister Stavros Kontonis had made the controversial decision in February after the first leg of one of two semi-final matches was interrupted in the waning of minutes of play due to hooligans rushing the field.

FIFA has threatened to exclude the Greek national team from play if the controversial decision stands, although the government side appears unmoved and blames the prospect of a football “Grexit” on the Greek football federation (EPO).

A motion to reverse the ruling has been filed by EPO with the Council of State. A hearing, set for Tuesday, is expected to be deferred due to a continuing industrial action by attorneys in the country.

Others reports state that FIFA will give the leftist Greek government a week’s time to reverse the decision.
