One slight disadvantage of Greece’s hotel tourism product, in comparison to its regional competitors, is the level and quality of services offered in high-end sector, although the country fared much better in the overall category.

According to data by ReviewPro gauging various parameters of Greece’s tourism sector, the hotel category received the highest general grade, buts lagged behind other competitor countries in the five- and four-star categories. The finding is important, given that per capita expenditures of tourists are, as expected, higher in the top tier hotel categories.

Overall, Greek hotels scored 84.5 percent on the Global Review Index, followed by Cyprus (83.2 percent).

Nevertheless, in the five-star category, the highest GRI is held by France (90.2 percent), followed by Croatia (90 percent).

Greece is in fifth place with 88.1 percent, with Turkey slightly back in last place at 86.1 percent.

In terms of four-star hotels, Croatia is first with 86 percent, followed by Croatia with 84.6 percent and Spain, 84.1 percent. Greece is in fourth place with 83.8 percent.

Greece fared well in the overall ranking because its numerous 3-star hotels – often family-run and usually a “backbone” of smaller islands and provincial coastal regions’ tourism industry – were first, garnering a rating of 84.1 percent.

In terms of restaurants and eateries, Cyprus was first with 84.4 percent, followed by Turkey with 84.1 percent
