Results of a latest opinion poll show main opposition New Democracy (ND) party ahead eight percentage points over ruling SYRIZA. The poll was conducted by the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki and presented on Friday evening by the private Athens broadcaster Skai.
Specifically, 24.5 percent of respondents preferred center-right ND when asked which party they would vote for if elections were held in the coming period. Leftist SYRIZA garnered 16.5 percent of respondents’ preferences. The difference between the two parties was 6.5 percent in a February opinion poll conducted by the same institution.
Third place was shared by the ultra-nationalist Golden Dawn (Chryssi Avgi) and the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), both garnering 6.5 percent. They are followed by a coalition bloc led by socialist Pasok, and the Union of Centrists, both with 4 percent. Two other parties currently in Parliament, the rightist-populist Independent Greeks (AN.EL) and the centrist Potami (River) parties are given under 3 percent of respondents’ preference.
Under Greece's election law, a 3-percent threshold is necessary to enter Parliament.
AN.EL is the current coalition partner of SYRIZA.
The “undecided” vote was calculated at 24 percent.
Asked to predict the winner of any coming election, 50.5 percent answered ND; 20.5 percent said SYRIZA would be re-elected
