Employers' groups warns against more tax, pension hikes; says middle class collapsing

Greece’s biggest employers’ federation this week warned against reported hikes in tax and social security contributions being tabled as proposals by the government in talks with institutional creditors.

Greece’s biggest employers’ federation this week warned against reported hikes in tax and social security contributions being tabled as proposals by the government in talks with institutional creditors.

The Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV) charged that the “middle classes in Greece are collapsing under the weight of high taxation, shrinking savings, and by extension, a further impoverishment”.

SEV said the current income tax structure in Greece – without even considering the social security contributions by wage earners and employers – is blatantly unfair to the “productive labor in the private sector.”

“… At the same time, households’ income has dramatically been reduced during the crisis, while tax evasion thrives…” a SEV announcement charged.
