Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico this week continued to step up his criticism over the leftist Greek government’s handling of the ongoing refugee/migrant crisis, saying all of Greece risks turning into a “hotspot” if Alexis Tsipras fails to contain the situation on the Greek-Turkish borders.
Fico, whose government has joined other central European states in taking a hardline vis-à-vis the waves of Mideast refugees and irregular migrants streaming towards western and northern Europe, said European leaders had warned the Greek prime minister in the summer of 2015 about the intensity of the problem and repercussions.
The Slovakian leader, during a visit to Skopje, also warned that if the refugee / migrant flows aren’t curbed by Turkey and Greece then they will be deflected elsewhere, pointing to the border between Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (fYRoM).
Fico visited the Greece-fYRoM frontier on Wednesday, three days before parliamentary elections in his country, where he spoke with 25 Slovakian police officers assisting in border patrols.
