The president of the hoteliers’ association on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos, the hardest hit spot in the European Union from the ongoing refugee / irregular migrant crisis, announced on Monday that pre-bookings for the 2016 tourism season have “collapsed”.

The president of the hoteliers’ association on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos, the hardest hit spot in the European Union from the ongoing refugee / irregular migrant crisis, announced on Monday that pre-bookings for the 2016 tourism season have “collapsed”.

“We’re watching developments with concern, and trying to keep our cool,” Pericles Antoniou was quoted by an Athens-area radio station as saying.

“Our mood is at rock bottom, the pathogenies and distortions accumulated through the decades were not rectified by the recession, then the migrant crisis arrived like the cherry on top of the cake, completing the damage,” he said in reference to Lesvos’ (Lesbos) tourism sector.

He merely added that the situation on the island will improve with the structures now being put in place to deal with the crisis.
