The Greek government is now meeting its obligations vis-a-vis the ongoing refugee crisis, according to the head of the Representation of the European Commission in Greece, Panos Karvounis.
In an interview with “Naftemporiki”, Karvounis also said there is no option than in completing the Greek program’s evaluation, while encouraging consensus – even with a greater government partnership – and for Athens to take “ownership” of the reforms package.
Brussels’ representative in Athens said the Commission is following the debate over broadcast licenses in Greece, particularly conditions of a prospective tender for television channel rights.
“What was requested from Greece was to receive and register the refugees in a reliable manner, and then to move them on towards resettlement in final destination European countries … after the intervention of the (Greek) armed forces, significant progress has been achieved in the refugee crisis. We judge that Greece is meeting its obligations,” he said, adding:
“NATO ships will transmit the movements of various boats leaving the Turkish coast to Turkish authorities. Over recent days we’ve seen that the number of refugees reaching the Greek islands has decreased in relation to January. Some weeks must pass before we can make safe conclusions.”
