Electronic cross-checking of vehicles is the state’s answer to the scourge of uninsured cars in Greece, with a relevant ministerial decision expected to be published in the coming days in the government gazette.

Tens of thousands of vehicles are reportedly circulating on Greek roads without insurance coverage, a problem that has been exacerbated by the ongoing economic crisis.

The process of electronic cross-checking was supposed to have been implemented last year, however, delays plagued the initiative.

Once begun the first notices to owners are expected in the next few weeks. After notification, vehicle owners will be given a few days to insure their vehicle and to pay a steep fine of 250 euros.

According to reports, any previously uninsured vehicles covered before a notification is sent will avoid the penalty.
